leaning engine
Today I was going to make a few CC trips above 4000 feet. So for I haven't been over 3000 MSL so I haven't leaned my engine, which is a Lycoming 0-235. Today before take off I had my rpm at 1000 and I pulled the mixture and watched my EGT rise slightly. I was waiting for the engine to run rough or my RPM increase, neither happened. The engine just died. I tried couple of times, but same results. Should I try the same process at say maybe 2000 RPM, closer to where the RPM will be at cruise?

does idle rise slightly when shutting down ? If not your probably too lean with the mixture screw (50-100 rpm rise at shutdown is what I like to see)

1000rpm is right for most A/C engines an a 50rpm rise is about what you should see. Check the engine operating manual for exact numbers. Your discription of the runup sounds like your good. 50rpm is hard to see on a bouncing tach an your engine has to be at operating temp to get a accurate reading on mixture rise. I would suggest you take it around the patch first an then do a mixture check after. If you adjust the mixture after a ground run it will be too rich. Get your numbers an go fly then do a check, I’m betting your good.
