I had my engine built by a local A&P. He had many of the parts and gave me a laundry list of what else was needed. My goal was to achieve what Continental would call a "zero time". So all the critical parts had to be either new or yellow tagged. I have attached a spreadsheet showing my costs.
Note that I bought Continental cylinders and approx $1000 can be saved by going with Superior. I also sent the cylinders to Lycon to have the compression increased to 9.5:1, NFS pistons installed with ceramic coating...this cost an additional $2326. Also I bought 2 new Slick Mags and I didn't have cores so this cost $2800.
I located many of the parts on ebay or through Barnstormers.
So what does this all tell you...try to find a decent core like Carl Orton did, you'll be into it for far less money! Although I'm real happy with my engine and it should crank out around 115HP, I would have been better off had I been patient and waited for a decent core.

Hey Don,
It looks like a Sky-tec starter you have installed there. Did you install the needle bearing with that starter or leave it out?
thanks,
Hi Rob,
No needle bearing. New style starter, so it gets left out.
I'm still trying to figure all this out.
Did you plug the oil hole for the needle bearing then? I thought you had too. Maybe someone knows for sure...
I didn’t build the engine so I’m not sure. My mechanic has retired and I have no way to contact him to ask the question
I'm planning on $16,500 total for mine INCLUDING big things I haven't purchased yet.. That includes (probably not complete), 4 new millenium cylinders, (not purchased yet), case reworked $900, crank turned .010 under ($840 for the FULL Aircraft Specialties treatment), $744 for the cam regrind, etc., and all 4 conn rods reworked, $821 for new accessory case since mine failed inspection, etc.
For a .010 crank, main bearings BY THEMSELVES are $721 (air power) (not purchased yet). I figure with the new bearings, rod bearings, rod hw, gaskets, rebuild parts required by TCM, etc. is another $1850.
Probably confusing you. I've got about $12K in it now; still have to purchase the o/haul parts, 4 cyls, and one rebuilt mag.
The B&C starter (which some claim has better life than the skytec) requires that you remove the needle bearing.
The skytec starter, if you look at it, has a nub that slides into the existing bearing, so the bearing remains in the engine. Since the starter nub is part of the starter case, it doesn't rotate in the bearing, so no oil hole needed.
I haven't yet chosen my starter. Was going to go with the skytec, but like I said, some folks think they don't last very long. You might check around on this; I haven't checked cuz I'm not yet ready.
