After finishing installing my tank for the 4th time I realized once I screwed the cap in all the way there's a 1/4 inch or so gap around it. Have any of you seen this and if so how did you remedy the situation.

You need to put more of the cork material around that area to raise the skin to the level you need.  Like this:
