Online Community of Zenith Builders and Flyers
I live in a hot dry climate so condensation or other means of water getting into my fuel tank is quite rare.
However in the past 6 months I have had two instances of water in my fuel tank. In each case I'm not certain exactly where it came from.
It happened again today and I almost missed it.
If you're running Auto gas and you just take a quick look at the fuel tester it can appear clear, depending on the lighting condition such as a dark hangar.
That happened to me, again, this morning.
I took a quick look at the fuel sample and it looked mostly clear in my dark hanger.
However there was something slightly milky/hazy about it.
I decided to take a closer look outside and could clearly see that by then the water and fuel had separated and the bottom half of the tester was water.
So I just wanted to remind people that if you are running Auto gas, you need to be a little more diligent about checking for water. It can appear almost the same color as Auto gas.
You also need to wait a few seconds for it to separate.
If the fuel appears milky/hazy at all you should take a minute to double check.

Gary, it’s very possible there was a little water in the auto fuel when you purchased it. When I had my ultralight I used auto fuel in a 2-cycle mix. I purchased a Mr Funnel that all fuel I bought got filtered through. It was scary how much trash was in the fuel. I used 100LL in my other planes, and never had any issues.
Now I can’t fly due to health reasons, so I gave my funnel to owners of a 701 and a 601xlb, and they use auto fuel, so filter all fuel going into their planes. They have found water in the funnel more than once.
