Good morning John. I made a carb heat box that works like a Cessna type. That is it has a butterfly that closes off the cool incoming air and draws hot air off the exhaust pipe. I'm using a ellison TBI for carburetion mounted down under the engine but I have no way to warm the injector without hot air and so far it has performed well. One thing I have seen others do is to build a box to circulate hot engine oil around the intake where the carb mounts.
Great Plains sells the u build exhaust kit which is what I used. I feel you must have a 4 into 1 exhaust for maximum torque. This is based on my Vw racing days. Steve also sells several prebuilt exhaust kits but I don't know if any would work on the 701. I wanted to do it my way.
The cowling is another matter. For me, it had to look "factory". It took me four months to get the cowling looking like it does today. I would use a nose bowl off another cowl like in the Aircraft Spruce catalog and wrap the rest of the engine with sheetmetal??
I think you are in for a hard row to hoe as far as cooling goes. I added fin extensions to my heads and have finally started to feel comfortable with it's temperatures. I could write a book on my experiences. Check out back issues of the Zeniar news and get on the Vw engine forums on Yahoo searching for the "Fat Fin Head" thread. There are two that I post test results on, " Air_ Vw " and "Aeroconversions".
Let say in closing, you are your own test pilot. 99 percent of the crap people will tell you about your engine will be just that, crap. You will have to work the bugs out because NO TWO INSTALLATIONS ARE THE SAME. I'm willing to help you all I can, but understand that you probably won't like what you here sometimes. I have found out that people listen as long as you tell them what they want to hear and get really upset and call you an idiot when you suggest they are doing something wrong. It doesn't matter that I have been there, done that and have the tshirt. Wayne
I WAS JUST SURFING THROUGH SOME CH750 WEBSITES AND CAME ACCROSS YOUR NAME WHICH SHOWS YOUR ADDRESS AS OLEY, PA. THOUGHT I'D DROP YOU A NOTE SINCE I LIVE IN EXETER TWP. I HAVE A 750 ON ORDER WITH A SHIP DATE THIS WEEK. DROP ME NOTE IF YOU LIKE, I'M SURE WE CAN SWAP SOME STORIES BEFORE TO LONG.
John, finally got my kit delivered on Wednesday. Crate looked like something heavy was shipped on top which resulted in the plywood being bent inward, the one side was damaged (bowed outward). Not a nice sight. Opened the crate and removed the first piece (cabin side assembly) only to find it looked like it was attacked by a mad can opener. Called FedEx and requested an adjuster before I removed any more parts. So here I sit waiting for an adjuster to call. Sooner or later I will get started! Have a good new year, I'll drop you a note after I get started.
Decided to drop you a note and let you know how far along I am. I completed the rudder, horizontal stab., elevator, wings, slats, flaperons, aft fuselage, firewall and part of the foward fuselage. Needless to say I have about a thousand questions and a major alignment problem with the foward fuselage. Don't know your schedule, but if you have some time, or need help with your 701 give me a call 610-582-0585. thx
