I'm building-make that unbuilding- a 601XL with Lycoming O235C1. I started Aug 07 and had just closed the wings. I believe I'll have to drill out about 1000 rivits to do the Mods. You are fortunate to have a different airframe.
So I am a new 650 plans builder. I know that I shouldn't jump into a design with a zillion new and "better" ideas. I see that several others have built their 601/650's with a sliding canopy and that therefore this isn't a new idea or unproven. Can anyone help with offering ideas about the pluses of this system? I know most pilot/builders will build per plans or kits and not dare think of changing something as major as this. Not that I think I am a better engineer, but have envisioned several ways to incorporate a sliding canopy, which I consider a huge safety feature adding this as removable (ejectable) and having a roll bar front and rear. I would love to hear constructive comments based on real experiences.
