Hi guys,

Completed the Rudder on Saturday, June 22nd.  A good learning experience.  I had to remove my first bad rivet due to a gap at the head.  Sweated that out since it was one of the last rivets installed prior to completion.  However, it went well and no damage to the skin.  It was on the nose rib, forward skin so I didn't have to chase the rivet inside the rudder.  Viewed the online video of the rudder build at the factory and I understand now why this kit will be a bit…

My experience with dangers of haze

One area of flying that has very little written about is "haze".There's a lot of stories about flight into IMC that usually center around flying into clouds, rain storms or black hole night experiences.

However I have learned that haze can be a subtle and deadly situation. The real problem is that aviation weather reports do a very poor job of identifying and reporting on it.

Yesterday was a classic example. I was flying home from Pine Mountain Lake in Northern…

Back from Tailless, N200BE

As I reported last January, N200BE was struck from the rear by a biplane during rollout after landing.  As you can see the tail of the Zodiac was chewed off by the biplane's prop.  You can read all about the accident on the FAA's accident website (01/29/2011).  What I wish to report is that as of 16 May, the little silver 601XL-B is airworthy again.   Thanks to Hampton Aviation in Mena, Arkanas, the tail of N200BE has been repaired.…

Zenair in Spain and at AeroSport 2010

AeroSport is one of the major annual fly-ins in Spain for recreational sport aircraft and ultralights. The event took place last weekend in spite of precarious weather and volcanic ash that kept airline traffic grounded over most of the country. Many light planes still flew in to AeroSport in Iguadala/Barcelona, including a dozen Zodiac models (CH 601 HD, HDS, XL and a CH 640). Both Zenair representatives for Spain had a display… Continue

Part 16: Installing the "Upgrade Package" to our Zodiac CH 601 XL: Installing the L-angle stiffeners to the top of the rear skin

We've made excellent progress over the past holiday weekend finalizing the drawings and verifying the parts. The wings are done and the center spar section is being verified.

As mentioned earlier, Gus Warren of FlyWithGus.net has announced that he will be hosting a Zodiac CH 601 XL "Upgrade Workshop" at his facility in Edgewater, Florida the second weekend in… Continue

Part 2: Installing the "Upgrade Package" to our Zodiac CH 601 XL: Drilling our the top wing skin rivets

In part two of this installment, we drill out the Avex blind rivets in the top wing skins. (Click here for the first post in this series on updating our Zodiac XL demonstrator per AMD's Safety Alert / Directive).

See the video clip at the bottom of this post for a good view of how we drilled out the blind rivets.

Removal of the wings and drilling… Continue

The Zodiac Solution: Training Wheels on a Motorcycle

I flew my Zodiac three hours Saturday enjoying a breezy fall morning following the ridge line of the Shenendoah. The plain flew beautifully, hands-off for the most part, and passed its four hundredth hour of flight (70 with me at the helm). Little did I know that it might be my last flight for a while. As I was dancing in the clouds, others were buy putting the finishing touches on their effort to ensure my "safety." The NTSB, FAA, Zenith, The Associations and several foreign bodies had… Continue

Flyin on a business trip and Lovin it!

Well that time came again and I need to be in Miami in the Morning . The questions was did I drive 4 to 5 hours or take the 601 xl and fly 1.4 hours? Well quick decision. I looked at the TFR over the everglades and the fact that the HWY is closed down, and decided to fly. The plan was to leave early in the morning, fly in to Opa Locka, get to my 9am meeting at the factory, then fly back by 1pm. I took off from SPG at 7 am, leveling the plane at 9500 feet. Can you say Awesome View! the… Continue

suzuki power

I am considering the Suzuki 1300 cc turbo auto engine for my XL.
Is there anyone who has experience with a similar installation and flying time behind this engine?
