I have individual fuel lines running from each tank to an Andair fuel selector valve. There is no cross-feed of fuel or vents - each tank is vented through its cap.
I've tried all sorts of caps including the original Zenith caps (they leak!) and settled on a modified Zenith cap that closes off the original peripheral external vents and has a snorkel in the center. See the topic Modified Snorkel Vent Cap for the details. Be sure to modify the cap the way Jerry Bryan did which he covers in a post in the topic. Works great!
No matter what fuel system you have, you're inevitably going to have slightly uneven fuel levels after a while on "both" and occasionally have to balance the tanks with the fuel selector. I've had absolutely no problems using the above described system on "both."
