Not sure if you knew him but Rolfe Benson passed away and I purchased his 601XL  ELSA with rotax 912  from his widow. I think he was a member of this group before his unexpected passing a couple weeks ago.
  • Tim McGuire

It is a CH601 but not an HD. The engine is a Rotax 912, 80 hp. I am new to aviation, 27hrs.

I only flew it twice, before getting snow bound in Dec. I saw your photos of the skis you built, very nice. Could they be used on a ch601, and could you send me the plans?

  • Ian Sowman

G'day Bob. Thanks for the comment re bungee life - I will get new ones as you suggest.
  • Stephen R. Smith

Hello Bob,  I did tear down my old motor and found that tappet failure had destroyed the camshaft.  The metal then got into the oil and destroyed the main barrings and the crankshaft.  The motor could be fixed/upgraded for about $5,000 but I decided I wanted a new one.  I may still fix the old one or sell as is - have not decided.

Thanks.  The inspection wasn't too painful but waiting for the paperwork was.  Lots of details have to be looked after on Canadian paperwork.  Fortunately I was traveling lots for work so I didn't mind the waiting too much

    Hi Bob:

Don't I wish to fly like a gull.

  • Stephen R. Smith

    Hello Bob,

    Nice workmanship on those skis!

    Steve

  • Ian Sowman

Your skis look good Bob, must be great to get out flying in the snow, always looks good on a nice day. Re my EA81, it has flown 20 hours on a Ragwing Storch so I have not changed anything for my installation, even the radiator and oil cooler will fit under the cowl in a similar position. Cheers, & happy flying.
  • Brian Fitzpatrick

Hi Bob:  Not good at computers.  This 3rd time attempting to reply. Gimme a chainsaw. Got your joke about Italian Mallards.  Started growing up in Sault Ste. Marie.

I like the looks of your skis.  Strong, no none sense.

My dad and uncle were prospectors and worked mostly around Blind River. Looking for gold but found uranium.  They had a 108-3 and a super cub both on floats and skis of course.  The combo skis were not as good as the big solid skis in deep soft snow. Good thing they had the solid skis on one day when landing on 10 mile lake one spring as dad landed long and ran out of ice.  I was in the back and heard him holler 'Cripes almighty!  and the engine revved up.  We water skied to the beach with the tail high.

The drillers fashioned a float from 45 gal drums to get us back to the ice.  Got home in time for the hockey game.  After that event the spring lay up from skis to floats was greatly shortened.  Uncle just died recently, 99. Said he had enough and would die on the full moon in Feb.  He did!

My project is proceeding slowly as I'm modifying for more strength as I will be using a Mazda 13b of 200 hp. which I think will be good for float flying in the mountains. W/B should be interesting but I may use the 801 wing to smooth the numbers.

    Bye for now.  Brian

    Hi Bob,

The display picture is our old plane, it only had a 65HP 2 stroke engine, we ended up buying a CH 601 HD with rotax 912UL (80HP), the registration is C-FRBC in canada, it's an advanced ultralight. I beileve my father contacted the guy from Midland and said he didn't have the specs for it. Docking wouldn't be much of an issue because we plan on building a hangar and pull out of the water each time, we live on the lake so it would be convenient. I've tried looking on the internet for specs but can't really find them, I have EDO floats for it, which are very simlar to Zenair's floats.  I Have attached a picture of our plane.

    Thank you,

    Brody

  • Brody Godmaire

    Hi Bob,

The 601 is registered with a rotax 912, I don't know where you seen Jabiru.. it used to be a jabiru but it isn't anymore, on the website it says 912 though.. I think what the guy from Zenair said was just to put the floats on without letting anyone know so it stays as an AULA , he said if we actually wanted Zenair to approove of it we would have to take it there so they can do testing so it would be the frist 601 in canada with floats. I'm going to try and get a hold of him again to see if he has the mounting specs.

    Thank you.

The VG's make the difference in safety for landing without ANY doubt.... however... I'm enjoying the HUGE extra lift I get when cruising as well!!  I don't fly any faster, but I AM capable of getting to altitude MUCH faster... haven't taken her above 10k alt yet... but I'd bet I can bump up against 12k Oxygen limits with the VG's!!

    Fly safe bud!!

  • Normand Lambert

    Hi Bob,

I couldn't find where in the chapter 459 it is said that teflon tape should not be used. If you can find this for me, please let me know where it is. I'm currently working with an EX MD-RA inspector to finish my plane and he is the one putting together my fuel system ???

    GOOD'AY BOB---

I sent one comment but being new at the art of getting messages sent, something crazy must have happen in the delivery.

Anyway,  you never know when my wife and I will show up at your door to take you up on the transition to the 701/750. We have a place near Thessalon, Ont. and usually leave there in September, so a trip to Ottawa is not out of the realm of thing to happen. What town are you near north of Ottawa?

Thanks for the offer, and as I said you never know!

    TOM

  • Thomas Jackson

    Bob---

I checked out the distance to Cobden, 7hr 47min, 589km. Our place is acturally in Sowerby, Ont which is about 9km east of Thessalon on a lake named Little Basswood. We have some friends that live in Dunrobin which is just north of Ottawa.

I Googled CPF4 on earth map and it looks very much like the field that I fly out of in Harvard, IL (0C0) grass with 3 runways.

Hope to see you in September. KIT,

    Tom

    - Fuselage mounting hardware for the STOL is an additional $390.00

Fuselage mounting hardware for the CH 750 is needed for attaching the struts to the fuselage. This includes a steel frame at the firewall area and steel brackets which attach to the main gear fittings.

No welding is required - please refer to the two attached pdf document attached.

  • Nicholas Heintz

    Bob,

If you have trouble viewing the pdf attachments, please email me at Nick@Zenair.com and I will resend the 2 attachments to show the front strut fitting for the 750, no welding is required on the engine mount.

    Hi Bob,

Congratulations are in order for the other Bob !! Thanks for the paint tip !

I had a very good price and the guy was very knowledgeable. Only thing left is to paint that CH701 !

    Thanks again.

    Norm

  • Gary Buster

Bob... I have the 912UL 80hp... I've got two "spring loaded ball joint" units to be welded from Zenith and the Tig just got a new bottle of Ar... tomorrow or Monday we start to configure and rebuild the exhaust.

Yeah Gidday Bob. Can't have it looking too good otherwise I'll be too scared to get it dirty on the beach and in paddocks with sheep $#!*..........It's getting into your summer so I guess your new skis will have to wait untill next winter. Cheers.
  • Normand Lambert

Hi Bob, maybe you could help me with that one !

What type of paperwork did Bob Stuart presented to TC for the registration process ???

TC says bill of sale, lease or ...?

    Regards,

    Norm

  • Normand Lambert

    Hi Bob,

Thanks for the info. I'll phone him up tonight and figure all of this out.

My CH701 is HOMEBUILT (experimental) so not a AULA.

    Regards,

    Norm

  • Rodney Rix

Hello to you fellow Canadian. Bob im working down in Windsor Ont. right now and I see your on this site quite a bit. Do you know anyone in this area withen 100 miles that has a flying 701? Most places I work I like to look up builders and go see there projects. But I would love to actually go for a flight in one that is complete.
  • Mike Ice

    Hi Bob,

I used to live in Ontario, a small place named Dunchurch, up near Parry Sound, in fact I have numerous relatives that live in Toronto.

I often think if I did not live in Alaska I would like to move back to Ontario.

Hope your day is a good one.

    Mike Ice

  • Thomas Jackson

    HI Bob,

Is the offer still open for some transition to the 701? I  will be closing the resort the end of August and will be in your area the first part of September (maybe around the 15th). As a reminder I'm in the Thessalon, Ontario area or about 6-7 hours from Cobden.

I do not have an internet connection, but once a week I get to town and use the library wi-fi.

    Tom

  • Andre Levesque

    Hi Bob,

Yes, it's not cheap. I did that mockup to see if it would fit on the panel but I'm not even sure yet nor am I at the stage of instrumention -:).

I may only go with a  traditional six pack  and my Avr80ace GPS , plus the mini EFIS from MGL. That should be enough for a 750 and the type of flying I'll be doing.

When you start building...you get excited and the panel becomes like an Airbus 380...lol

Reality sets in once you check the prices and complexity , weight it adds to the build.

  • richard lauzon

1 wing ready for deburring.  went really good at midland. great experiance.goal is to have it flying by april. starting on it full time after the deer hunt....
  • Shelley Kemp

    Hi Bob,

Thanks for the warm welcome. I'm interested in instrumentation.  My husband wants a glass panel.  With the cost of the kit and engine, I'm thinking we need to go with a simple but effective panel.  Yours sounds like more than enough for a good start!

  • Normand Lambert

    Hi Bob,

If you're looking for 3M anti-skid tape for cheap, look at Rona or Reno Depot. They sell the stuff by the linear foot. They sell it in 1, 2 or 4 inches wide. I bought 20 feet of 4 inches wide anti-skid self-sticking tape for my floats and I paid around 24$ with taxes.

    Beats Aircraft Scrounch ...

    Norm

  • John Williams

He Bob, Thanks for the comment and welcome. I look forward to contributing. I attached a pic of picking up the fueselage kit for the CH750. My father and I are building it. (he's the expert), but also liked the question about avionics from Ms Kemp.20111028_101236.jpg

  • Normand Lambert

    Hi Bob,

I have a question if I may, would you consider 2 hours of transition training in your 750 for me ?

Think this over and let's talk about this soon.

    Norm

  • Normand Lambert

    Hi Bob,

Thanks for the comment back. I'll be checking on this and try to come up with possible dates and let you know. Where do you fly from ? I can get to any airport in your vicinity with the Cherokee provided it is in the Canadian airport directory...

Thanks for the help, insurance wants me to get 2 hours of type training to be fully insured.

You seemed THE person to ask...

    Norm

  • Normand Lambert

    Hi Bob,

Thanks for your help ... and for the comments ! It really helps to get tips from people that have been there - done that!  The fuel pump as you said must be turned off after engine start or mixture leaned if the pump remains active otherwise it fools the AeroInjector.

For the flight tests, I'll let you know in advance... Thanks for the offer too.

Say Hi to Bob Stuart for me...I still have to phone him up.

    Norm

  • Ron D Leclerc

I'm not to concerned with what Wayne Clagg has done! You should know something about a VW engines before you make comments on this engine! For you information this is a Porsche/VW Type 4 engine with an all aluminum case... NOT a Type 1 engine with a mag/alum case that has problems with sever cracking and other know problems!

It bothers me when people make comments and know absolutely nothing about what they are talking or commenting on!

  • Ken Sandine

Thank you, Bob, for your generous contributions and commentary.  I'm looking forward to mi first flight behind the Rotax.

  • Jerry Latimer

    Bob,

I used double sided tape to install the VG's.  If I decide to I can rivet them to the wing nose skin.  They would actually look much better riveted.

    Jerry

  • Paulo Pagamissi

Hello Bob. My name is Paulo Pagamissi I'm from Brazil and I'm building a CH-750 from the kit. My kit is Series No. 1. I saw your comments about the structural problems presented in the back of the trunk of her CH-750.

Please can you pass the part number of the pieces of SeriesNo. 2 that you used to strengthen its fuselage, so I can buy direct from Zenith??

    Thank you!!

  • Paulo Pagamissi

Good morning Bob. Thank you for your attention. My email is this: paulopagamissi@yahoo.com.br
It's a great pleasure to have you as a friend. A big hug !!!!!!
  • Normand Lambert

    Hi Bob,

Not quite  ! These are used to hold broom to walls ... any round object for that matter.

Basically the same as the door latch and from Rona... Aircraft (!!! - cheap)

    Norm

  • Normand Lambert

    Hi Bob
Thanks for the heads up for the opening... I got a large
Opening in the bottom cowl..i also installed an oil cooler
Behind the radiator up front ... Hope it will be ok.
Is Bob flying his 701 much ???
  • Thomas Jackson

    BOB,

I just received my copy of Zenair News  # 188 and really enjoyed your article about your 750 on skis. I have skis on my bucket list for next year, either plans built or I have been looking at the brand TrickAir skis. Joyce and I were at Oshkosh at the January ski fly in, at Pioneer air field, and with over 30 planes, many of them on TrickAir,  it made me hungry for some skis.

    Fly Safe,

    Tom

  • Russ Harris

    Hi Bob,

Thanks for adding me as a friend, and yes, you are correct about our a/c--Angus built it.  We bought it from him last spring.  I feel privileged to have crossed paths with him, a man of integrity.  On another subject, I'd sure like to know how you're getting along with your skiis.  I'll be looking forward to hearing from you & thanks again.

                                                            Russ

  • Normand Lambert

    Hi Bob,

Thanks for the comment about the Tracking for the 701/750. I was beginning to wonder where all that right rudder was going...Never noticed this on the Cherokee...Anyhow, this reassures me quite a bit.I'll have videos soon.

How are you doing ? Take care.

    Norm

  • Normand Lambert

    Hi Bob,

Pretty but NOT a HANGAR QUEEN !!! Hopefully....

    Regards,

  • Jack Schnurr

I start out today, it will be a 7 day drive,

  • Blaze Cunningham

Hi Bob, Yes...the models around the 'G' series are simple and fun to fly.  I hope to find same in the Z planes.

    Blaze

  • Normand Lambert

    Hi Bob,

I agree for Bob Stuart seats..Suits him just fine I guess...

Remember my "type-training" question, Where do you fly off of ???

Is it an airport where the Cherokee would be able to land and depart from ???

Can you sign me off for type training ???

    Time is coming fast...

    Regards,

    Norm

  • Normand Lambert

    Bob,

I'll be in touch soon...Still working out some bugs and testing instruments.

    Regards,

    Normand

  • Normand Lambert

    Hi Bob,

I think the TinyTach is almost identical to the one I got. Mine has the wire wrapping to a plug cable for engine RPM OR propellor shaft via the sensor. Also has hobbs (which I already had) and maintenance period left alarm. You set the maintenance period and it decrements itself when you fly and let you know when it's time to MAINTAIN your plane...I didn't need any of this stuff but the functions are there. As for the battery, I hated the fact that you dont really know when the digital tach will fail because the battery has gone. That's why we used a regulator and the 12v from the plane.

Nice water rudder by the way !

    Keep in touch.

    Norm

  • steve methot

Thanks for the comment Bob, I enjoyed your pictures as well. I fly out of Tally Ho, a private airstrip near Alliston, On. I will have a look at the rudder rigging as you pointed out. Not sure about the nose tube however. The airplane was build as a tail drager and never had a nose wheel so there is nothing left over from a previous conversion. Is this what you meant?

    Cheers.
