Building and Flying Info / Your Profession / Other Background Info
Hi, I'm a 40yrs old telecom engineer from Northern Finland. October 2010 we bought a Zenair STOL CH-701, manufactured by Zenair Ltd, Ontario, Canada. The plane had not been flying since 2006 and needed some updates and service. Now it's back in business again!
Good luck on the rebuild. They are great airplanes. I live in northwest Illinois and we just had the worst snow storm in many years. Up to 24 inches of snow and wind speeds of 45 mph. I think I'll start on some wheel skis!
Welcome aboard the Zenith group. It is a great group for getting help and connecting with people who share a common interest. I know you will enjoy your plane. Are you flying now?
Ari, Wade Grandpre from north Idaho here. I did a beanie mod when I built my 701, so I would be interested in your experience of flying with and without the mod. and how it flies.I have never had the pleasure of flying a regular 701. I did a quite a few mod`s while building and I am still planning on more, the experimentor, experimenting on his experimental a/c.
I agree if the Beanie was made using the oridinary wing rib it would be a SUPER BEANIE...
Would help with wing loading and would give more headroom ... I taught of that but the leading edge design was a challenge for me... I'm checking for the strut and I'll let you know what I find.
I am 185cm but more than 50 years old...So old school measurements !
Well you know Americans...what they didn't invent...they dont use !
Same for me, The inside Beanie is covered with insulating aluminum/plastic kinda wrap...I used this material in the doors and around the luggage area.Works real good and stop noises ...especially oilcanning and warms up the place.
I haven't played with the heating in my 701. I know that it is way TOO COLD as all temps are way TOO LOW in the winter. I will have to install a winter kit if I want to see those needles reach a nice WARM temp. As is, I never saw more than 130 for oil and 50 for water coolant. These are never enough to warm anything... Having an auto conversion engine, I dont worry abot those low temps (shock cooling) but the PILOT NEVER gets WARM..That I really hate. This will have to wait for next year as summer is coming...Soon hopefully !
Arie, I located your lake on Google earth however the resalusion is not very good to see the dock. It's hard to find a remote location with in forty plus miles of home here in the states.
Arie, Schould you desire to forward photos, it may be better to send them direct. My address is utemos@verizon.net. If you desire to see my strip go to google earth, my address is 3224 sterner road Nazareth pa. 18064. I own a eighty acre farm which I rent to a local farmer who raises mostly grass for horses.

Ari,
Looks like you are making some progress. I spent a lot of time today fixing a mistake! Used wrong head on rivet gun and had to drill out many rivers.

Hi Ari,
You're right ! Actually I wonder why this roof has to be designed flat ??? I guess it is
easier to fabricate having no curves - like the rest of the 701 anyway... But, once you
taste the added SPACE, you wonder why you didn't modify that roof any earlier...
Being 6 feet 2 inches, It was in my top 5 priority list todo...

Norm
