Thanks for the info, Wayne. My hat is off to you for building yours plans-only. I don't know if I could do that. But I'm really enjoying building the kit. I will certainly follow your progress with your VW engine. Thanks again for your response, and happy flying!
Randy
Thanks for your comment. At present I am using the Rotax 582, but a friend at the flying club is using a VW with belt reducer and admission charger. He is, however, not very happy due to the weight of his installation (about 100 kg). Which is the ideal engine? I was thinking about a Hirth (2-stroke with electronic injection and ignition), 4-stroke engines are too expensive here, except VW. I wish you good results and would be interested to learn from your experience with the VW.
Wayne,
sure I am going to find out the infos you need about the VW of my flying fellow. This could take a certain time, since he his absent from the club for a while due to personal affairs. Right you have by mentioning the reason to choose a VW! In my case, I bought an older 701 with Rotax 582 (not 912) exactly due to the same reason: either fly this one or continue to dream...
Anyhow, after my revamping the 701 looks and flies good (with fewer instruments than yours), really the only thing I would like to improve is the engine. Reason? A bit more power, less consumption, and a lot more trusting. By the way, the Jabiru 2200 is also too expensive here, and the Japanese HKS 700 is too weak, unless one install a charger (as Italian ICP does with their Bingo). Curiously, no mention about charger on HKS' site...
Glad to exchange ideas with you.

Clagg, I'm on the road untill April 1 and its hard too get my e-mail when I'm on the move all the time. I can tell you I have 6 hours on the motor and it working great. The motor can put out 120 hp at 7200 rpm's and I have the motor set to run 6200 rpm's and it makes 108 at that rpm and it can run there all day. I'm running it at 5500 for cruise and it is making 90 hp there. The motor cost me 1000.00 complete and the redrive was made by Raven redrive and the motor mount too. I have 4500.00 from the firewall forward without the prop. The plane leaves the ground with no wind in a 100 yards, with a wind of 10 mphs it leaves the ground in 100 feet. I have to go Later Al
Did you get your VW from Great Plaines? What kind of Carb set up do you have, where is it mounted? By the looks of your pictures, it seems like you did some custom work on engine ventilation. Did you make your own cowling? Looks great.
I'm going to be buying my engine soon and need to decide how it will all fit. The FWF on the 701 is pretty small. Any comments and suggestions are appreciated.
Hi Richard
I am running a Subaru EA81 with a AMax redrive. Driving a 72in wardrive prop.
Second radiator set up as you can see now. I did some research on the web for radiator installs and then just copied Macsmachine install. I don't think mine is nearly as good and I have not built the intake to maximise the setup.
I have about 50 hours with the current setup. I don't have the exact figures at hand but it climbs at around 600-800 fpm at 45 to 55 kts. Cruise is 70kts. Empty 310kg. Been in the shed for nealy a year so have to finish some other mods and get flying again.
If I had the choice again I would prob fit a rotax, jab or something lighter. Weight is the key!!
Did your carb manifold installation need to deal with the nose gear clearance? According to Great Planes, a rear or bottow mount requires a modification of the nose gear or manifold.
Richard
I'm usually analytical and sure of myself when I finally take the step to do something. But I am cautiously optimistic this time. The last time I was in a 701 was a few years back and Roger was at the controls. Most of my experience is Cessnas. Well duty calls. Best of luck; you have a great looking plane.
Chris
Hi Richard , I like your cowl that you have on your 701. do you have a VW installed on your 701? If so how does it preform for you? is it Great Planes engine? Iwould like to get any Info as I am building a 701 and looking at the VW engine. Mike Bradsher
Richard,
I come back to you after a long time. You asked me about the operating conditions of my friend's VW 2200 in his 701 but I could not inform since I had not seen this friend for a while. Unfortunately, I am not able to inform because he apparently gave up to fly, his 701 is practically abandoned in the hangar without the engine. I am very sorry to disapoint you.
Sergio
Hi Wayne
I plan to be at the open house next Saturday hope to catch up with you and see your 701 in person. After you repitched your prop have you seen a noticable change in preformance? I have not started on my VW engine but hope to this fall. Hopw to see you Saturday. Mike
Hi Wayne, I guess by the time you read this you will have already been to the Zenith flyin. Hopefully next year for me. I live near Roanoke, VA. Is Milton within driving distance of here? A day trip to see a fellow 701 owner would be great. Hope the weather made for a nice trip out and back. Look forward to meeting you someday soon. Jack
Hi Wayne, Sorry to hear such disappointing news. What do you have for an engine? I have a new Jabiru 2000 and have yet to start it up. I am ready to install the wings and get it painted. My garage is to small for that so I will have to find a hanger. Would love to make a trip overland. It is about 5 hrs from my house. Two weeks ago I went to Chicago to visit my daughter and past near your place unaware of your location. Will not go by next trip. Hope you are back in the air with that 701 shortly. Jack (N560JK)
Hi Wayne
I am sorry that you were no able to attend the open house in Mexico yesterday. I sure was hoping to meet you and talk to you about your Problems. Have you made any decision as to what you are going to do about your VW Engine? If you decide to change what would be your next Choice? I am still conserding the VW. Mike
Hi Wayne
I guess you have gotten the bugs worked out of the VW engine. 3.1 hr cross country thats Great. Worked on the 701 today, if I ever get the fueslage finished I will be ready to put it all together. Then I plan to get started on the VW. I noticed that Zenith put a new prop on their 701 have you heard any comments on it. When you get a chance let me know how things are going. Mike
Wayne, your last photos are great, really. You have the ideal place for your 701 in the farm. By the way, how is your VW doing despite of its weight? I am curious about this since many people discuss here about engines, mainly VWs for the STOL. I myself did not decide until now and continue with my 582 (recently overhauled). Regards, Sergio.
Hi Wayne,
Are you still looking for an annual condition inspection for the 701? If so I have one and I believe it came from EAA. You are welcome to a copy if you need it still.
Dec 31 I will be traveling to Chicago, Il. And I must go real near your airport/strip. Will you be around that day? I hope to be about there by mid morning. I would like to take a look at your 701. I want to see how you installed your door struts. Hope you will be around.
See Ya soon.
Jack
Hi Wayne,
Well it is close to the travel date. I will be driving to Chicago Thur the 31st.
I should be in your area between 9 or 10am. If you could give me directions or an address that will work in the GPS I sure would like to stop by.
See you had a nice little cross country. It will be nice when mine is ready to fly.
I guess we can talk Thur. See ya soon.
Haven't checked weather but I have a 1995 Ranger 4 wheel drive that runs fine. I will be there around 9, if all goes well. Later if not. Looking forward to meeting you. I worked on fighters for about 6 years in the USAF.
See Ya Thur.
Jack
Greetings Wayne; I have had quite a time trying to get the 2170 engine to run properly. I am using the aero vee carb mounted on top of the engine. I first tried using a fuel pump with regulated pressure to 1.5 psi . It was a problem in that the engine would not run when the power was tuned off. I have had problems adjusting fuel flow to the engine. When it was running OK at 3600 the idle was way rich. I have resolved that problem by going to the leanest needle. I thought that I had too much prop for the engine-Culver sold me the prop they thought was ideal a 74X46. GP recommends 72X40 That was working OK for my last flight at the end of October. The plane is now resting for the winter. The other problem in flight was a fluctuating oil pressure, what oil are you using? I am looking forward to April when flight testing will resume.
Regards Colin
Hello Wayne,
the 582 was already installed as I bought the aircraft. It is a light-weight engine, just 65 HP, and drinks a lot for the performance. The 582 is OK but a little too weak for 2 persons and hot weather like now (Brazilian summer with temp. about 32 °C). The real advantage is the weight, but I also considered a Hirth with electronic injection. The problem is that Hirth has no representative in Brazil and I heard that some new regulation to come will afford 4 stroke power plants... But back to you, is the 3701 84 or 100 HP ? I think either one would be a very good choice! If you decide to install one of them, I would be very interested to learn your experiences from you. Maybe that new regulation I mentioned would accept "clean" 2 stroke engines like the new generation Hirths.
Sergio
The engine I was looking at was a 100 hp version, fuel injected with oil injection also. Oregon aircraft design has it. They claim only break in time on the engine and he sent me an email the other day saying they would take 6500 for it. 2000 less than they originally wanted. That is really hard to pass up, but the pictures I have seen with the 3701 on a CH701 have the injectors and top of the head above the cowling. Something that is unacceptable to me.
Well, I'm off to St. Maarten in the morning for a little sun. This snow and cold weather is about to get to me. I am self employed and we earn a trip every year from a supplier otherwise we would never be able to afford it. Thanks for getting back with me.
By the way, I have been posting some stuff in the vw engine groups on Yahoo Groups. Might be interesting reading for you.
