Yep, I would consider myself lucky to get my better half involved in the 701 build.
And again, you're right...Start them small and work their confidence up to ....making a CANOPY COVER...!!! Honey are you there ???? I think she just ran out !!! ;-)
So, Have you decided yet on which system you'll use to make sure the wheels are either up or down ??? I got the same problem here and tought of the mirrors on the wings ...
I chose a Viking a/c eng. I have a honda fit car and the core of a viking is the same with fuel inj. and electronic ign.. it really is responsive and smooth. only runup and taxi so far.
yes the cam eg. was an auto conversion that followed n the footsteps of a lot of conversions.. they failed to do a lot of R@D and changes to really make it an a/c eng, and it was to heavy. most builders are willing to do some retrofittig and adapting but are not willing to spend years at it!! the viking people have done the retrofitting and R@D and factory support. They seem to have the attitude to be in business foe the long haul. in my research I found a couple of videos that showed the evolution and adaptation of the fit eng .core into a light wieght a/c eng. with dependablity and ease of maint. and operation. so far I am satisfied with it. it really runs almost turbine smooth after starting and above a slow idle. we will see how it fly`s in the near future at which time I will post on Zenith website.
The old radiator was already located behind the propellor under the redrive. The new one is larger and that was the challenge... Have to redo the bottom cowl. More fiberglass and paint. At least, it is fitted now. The new fork has tabs used to haul the plane and will be used for the skis (if ever used). Thanks for the explanation for the cold/hot air, I'll look into that.

The new radiator is LIGHTER and the CH750 fork too, so it's good for my total weight and CofG.
I'll keep you posted on the new numbers (coolant temps)
The concern is that I already started to build an aircraft (wood). As it takes times, I tried to chase a used STOL, so i can wait & carry building, quietly.
The only thing to adjust is the elevator trim and that's it !
Took off at around 50mph and grabbed altitude at 75mph - 500 fpm being conservator... Very nice, no bad tendencies to drop a wing or anything. Went to 2200 feet for some stalls - there again no surprises - with the elevator full up, the 701 raised its nose and mushed down straight as an arrow. Aileron control remained good although sluggish. Rate of descent was 1000 fpm !!!
Applied nose down and gradual full power and here we went.
Landings were so easy that I thought I had piloted a 701 in a past life !
Looking forward to more flight time in this little bird soon....
You were very kind to send me a set of plans for wheel penetration skis (for the 750) some time ago, and I, in my complete computer ineptitude, accidently deleted them. At your convenience, would you please resend them? My e-mail address is randrfield@blackfoot.net. We bought Angus Watt's 750 in May of last year. Thanks, Bob.
Hey Bob, we've got some -30C temps here in the north. While you're dpwn there in the south I guess its the float season starting or so? I love Canada in any case excluding the ice hockey WC
hey Bob, do you know of anyone with a 750 in lower michigan that could show me some flight time to get some experience in the feel of the plane before I start my test program?
I got your plans for the wheel-skis but need to get some soldering lessons before I can make those. Too bad they're not for sale anywhere...Also, they're made of round stock which is difficult to put together. For me, I would rather use square stock whenever possible...easier to work with...
I am currently preparing my CH750 for paint and would like to know the company you used to purchase the stripes for your 750. I cannot find any suitable strips at any or the suppliers I have checked. No rush, I live in Pa and have to wait for warmer weather before I can start painting (spray booth is unheated). Thank you
I finally made it to the airport. You had asked me about the setup that I used to do the video that I recently posted. Here are a couple of photos. Basically, I'm using a GOPRO camera with a suction cup camera mount (Delkin Devices Fat Gecko). By using the suction mount I don't have to drill holes in the plane and I can mount it where ever I want. So far it has fallen from the plane. A friend of mine uses the same setup to take videos of him doing aerobatics and so far hasn't lost his.
No problem...For the tires, I bought the whole landing gear from Zenair a long time ago. It came with the tubes and the rims are 2 pieces screwed together... Should I or Can I get away with using the tubes ???
For that purpose, I would have to get a valvefor my rims. Where can I get those valves ?
Also, the rims are 2 pieces bolted together, wouldn't they leak air and that's why they use tubes inside ???
Wainting on your answer to order or not new tubes .....
Regards,
Norm
Ps Once again, someone told me that my engine sounded nice and that the plane seemed to have plenty enough power on takeoff...Nice to know !
1) what happened with your float installation ? I'm just curious to what you could do about MD-RA and paperwork there. Is there a possible solution where you could fly them ?
2) I have somebody around here that would like to build straight 1450 Zenair floats from a pre-drilled kit, He's looking for advice, tips, general questions about quality of components and ease fabrication, if I gave you his em,amail address, would you be willing to help ? He has a Pegazair, lyco 235 115 hp, warp drive tripale 72" GW 1450...

Been sometime since you posted...Glad to see you're doing fine !
Yep, that was really something else...I never landed while some other aircraft was doing the same ...So coming out of base and seeing the glider was a neat surprise ! We did it side by side and I kept an eye on these guys until...I realized they were landing FASTER than the 701 !!!
I was really laighing this one by myself while taking off again (touch and go!).
The REAL joy was to see it caught on video by my better half !
Thanks for the welcome - am very excited to finally begin this project. Am doing my build at my BC home in desert country of Osoyoos, BC. If you are travelling this way, please stop at visit!
When I was doing the slow flight, I was monitoring a frequency that all the training schools use to broadcast their position, altitude, direction of flight, etc. Did you notice all of the different accents. It covers an area from Phoenix to 20 miles due south of Phoenix and is quite crowded. We had 2 mid airs last year in this area. No one hurt!!!
At Casa Grande the flight schools use the ILS approach there to practice their approaches. Since CGZ doesn't have a control tower, they can do it without talking to ATC. The frequency can really get busy and make it really difficult for the VFR pilots to get into the airport. It really gets fun when they are using the ILS to runway 5 and the GPS approach to runway 23 at the same time.
I have been making decent progress with my 750 kit (ready to rivet forward fuselage and start finishing kit/controls). Every once in a while I think "jeez, I still haven't flown in one yet."
Is it possible to meet up sometime, perhaps after Thanksgiving? I would still like to come and visit you, and see your plane.
Hi Bob,
I checked the current landing gear plan for the CH701 and they use the 9010HD bungee cord. I think in the previous plans called for the 1080HD also. The 1080HD is thicker and shorter than the 9010HD...
The 1080HD supports 900lbs against 475 for the 9010HD.
I think I will go for the 1080HD anyway.
Thanks for the comment Bob.
By the way I talked with the other Bob... was nice!

I'm weighing my electronic instrument options. The Dynon skyview system is obviously a great set-up but it sure looks like it ends up as an expensive panel by the time it's complete. Also looking at MGL explorer. Is Dynon worth it in the long run for a mostly VFR plane, or is a simpler less costly solution with MGL perfectly adequate? What are your thoughts?
Thanks Bob for the ski plan offer. send to Dave@DleeCo.com I was just thinking the other day at the first snowfall that it was time to get started on this again.
Bungee Installation Tool - THANK YOU... fantastic solution. I used a 3/8" drive ratchet with a short cheater bar, a 7/16 socket fits right into the front tube, and all I can say is you are right...
Thanks for the phone numbers Bob. I live in Watertown NY and Mark would be my best and nearest bet for help upgrading my 601 HDS. It was built in 2000 and I bought it in 2005. Thanks again.

Bob, sorry for the loss of your father. My plane is safe and tucked away until the flock returns to Canada. I do fear that they may bring down an airliner landing at Allentown airport. I am also getting to the age when one should give up flying. As of now I can still handle short strips. You can see my strip on maps or Google earth. 3224 sterner road Nazareth pa. Temos

Just noticed another one of your comment on the internet about the Pegazair. For your info the company still exists and is thriving, their "Pegazair" still performs incredibly and they now produce a 4 seat version called the "Levitation" with a useful load of around a thousand pounds with 180hp Lycoming. Just thought I should give you the correct information so you could pass it on correctly.

Hi Bob,
Let me know what you find because this really is a concern...
Don't they look HIGH/HUGE on floats ??? Even boarding a CH701 on amphib is
quite a feat... My better half is 5 feet 1 inch and she almost needs a small ladder to climb onboard when on land.
Keep me posted and i'll keep digging to find something useful.

Hi Bob,
Ok I saw how you did replace the bungee. Very easy if engine isn't in the plane.
But with the engine mount and all fuel and other cable in the way, it is way more difficult.
What is the bungee part number (Aircraft Spruce ???) so I could order one to replace my out-of-date one ???
Thanks for the headsup.
