Now and then I make a mistake and need to drill a #30 hole to line up with one or more parts that have already been opened up to #30 final size. Rather than just drill #30 with no pilot and have a rough hole, I take three steps: 1) start a #30 hole using the predrilled parts for alignment, but drill just deep enough to make a good centered mark, 2) use the mark to drill #40, 3) open up to a perfectly centered, smooth walled #40 hole.
