I performed a bench test of this device using a resettable 5 amp breaker and increased the voltage until it tripped the breaker at 16.2 volts which is what the manufacturer claimed.

I then installed it in my plane and connected it to my MGL electronic circuit breakers (ECB) with a 1 amp setting and .01 second trip time. Using the push button switch shown in the pic to initiate the short I tested it multiple times with the engine off and multiple times with the engine running. The MGL breaker trips instantly and notifies me at the efis panel of the breaker trip. The field circuit current draw on my Viking alternator is around .10 amps. The push button shown would be used to verify proper operation at maintenance intervals.

Installation is simple but you will have to install a aviation grade resettable breaker in the alternator field circuit and it should prevent an overvoltage situation should the voltage regulator ever fail.
