I am after some advice. I was told by the previous owner of my 601 XL that my approach speed should be 70 kts slowing to 60 kts over the fence. I am keeping to these speeds but use a lot of runway as the plane just keeps floating on.

I checked the stall speed yesterday and it was still flying at a fraction over35 kts so what would be your advice for the approach speed to maximise its short field capability?

Thanks

45 -48 kts

I have found it best to always land the CH601XL-B with full flaps.

Applying full flaps on base leg after slowing to flap extension speed on downwind.

Full flaps seem to settle the slippery airframe down and turn the handling character to that of a docile CH601HD.

Without flaps its a "tail twitching floater" that seems to take forever to settle on its wheels.

There is a formula for calculating landing speeds. I don't remember what it is so I won't guess, but it should be easy to find.

Well, you don't say if your stall speed was found with full flaps or several other variables, but after reviewing some stuff here's my guess.  Assuming you tested with full flaps take 36 kts x 1.3 = 47 kts approach speed.  This is in line with a reference that I found stating that the approach speed for the CH 601XL-B is 50 kts.  NOTE: This is for final approach; you probably don't want to try making any turns at that speed with full flaps.  Just my guess on all of this, of course.

Thanks all. I will be doing some circuits this weekend and will try final approach at 50 kts with full flap

Try steepening your approach angle a little
