I`m buying a plane and completely new to this

got a few questions about the process

lets assume the plane is sound mechanically

The plane is a flying Canadian registered Zenith

how would you handle the funds transfer and the change of ownership?

I`m in Ontario and the plane is in Quebec...how does sales tax work...do you pay tax?

How do you check if there is liens on the plane?

or anything else you think a babe in the woods should know...happy to hear it

Thanks

Michael

COPA (the Canadian Owners and Pilots Association) has a guide called "COPA Guide to Buying an Aircraft" that should answer all your questions. It's a 110 page PDF that you can download from their website - you might have to become a member first, but it's worthwhile for this kind of thing. The PDF includes a sample offer letter, bill of sale, receipt, and includes a section about buying a homebuilt aircraft.

Thanks very much for the info

I’ll give it a good read

No problem! I went through the process last year, so if you have questions that aren't answered in the guide, I might have an answer or be able to point you in the right direction. Here in BC I had to pay a 12% provincial tax (!), but I'm not sure how it works in Ontario. Also, it took four months for Transport Canada to send me the registration (which you can't fly without) - I don't know if they're still that backed up, but I'd recommend paying for an interim registration if you want to fly the aircraft soon after you buy it. I had read somewhere (maybe in that guide) that it usually doesn't take TC any longer to process a regular registration than an interim registration, but I suspect that isn't true anymore.

Funny you mention transport Canada taking their time

i called the transport Canada 1-800 number to check to see if I could import a plane into Canada … no answer.., left 3 messages and they have not returned my call in 3 weeks

i called Canada customs about importing… they didn’t believe me that I could not reach anyone at transport Canada …. So Canada customs called transport Canada while I’m listening in… Canada customs could not get a human to pick up the phone or return thier calls either .,,

so I don’t know what’s going on over there …

Yikes! Maybe they're all working from home still and the phone is ringing in an empty office somewhere.

Good luck!
