Online Community of Zenith Builders and Flyers
Hello All, I have just completed the horizontal stabilizer, less the elevator and have a question about the elevator hinge pin and it's free movement. My hinge pin is free to move / slide out of the two sides of the hinge. Is this supposed to be? Is the hinge pin supposed to be able to work it's self out? If I move the hinge back and forth multiple times, the pin wants to travel out to one side or the other... Thank you in advance for your comments and experiences with this... Logic tells me that this could be a serious problem if the hinge pin works itself out in flight...

You need to safety wire the hinge: cut the pin a little shorter and drill a small hole in the hinge barrel, then run a safety wire through . Hinge pin ha no room to go anywhere!
When the rivets are installed it will not be nearly as loose. If you rivet the stabilizer and elevator separately it might be very difficult to install the pin. Did that once. Next project had the stabilizer and elevator both riveted except for the hinge line. Put the pin in finished the riveting. When the rivets are pulled it puts a little bend in the hinge it at each one. With that long a pin it will be difficult to remove and install. I used two pins, one from each side. Still need to be secured. Your experience may differ.
