Hi All,

What are you using, if anything, to treat the aluminum and other metals from corrosion as you assemble the parts of your aircraft? Is Corrosion X enough or is there a good replacement for zinc chromate that can be used? Thanks for reading this, have a great day!

I like Cortec - as used in the Factory workshops. It is water based, clean and easy to use and dries in minutes in front of a fan - only trick we find is to use distilled water when diluting (20% water to 80% Cortec) to avoid mineral stains. About 2 liters will do a whole aircraft - amazing, and over run is easy to wipe off. The paint brushes must be well cleaned - and plan to replace them once in a while...

We plan to use Corrosion X or similar as a biennial treatment later on - just a belt and braces concept in the Tropics!!!

Above all, use something that you are comfortable with. I am not comfortable with Zinc Chromate - I work with girls building planes and do not like anything which might get a 'Californian Style' warning - although that eliminates all substances known to man!!!
I use zinc oxide or chromate, depending on what is available at the local Canadian Tire store.
However, I don't spray it. I turn the can upside down and use duct tape to keep the valve open for an hour or two, until all the pressure is gone.
I shake and repeat until I am satisfied there is no pressure left.
Then, one more shake and I open (very carefully!!!) the can with a regular can opener.
I transfer the contents (including the steel ball) to a can with a lid.

The product is applied with a disposable foam brush.

I always work on a well ventilated area, the fumes are nasty! Very flammable and hazardous to your health.
Yep, I use a alum clean first before I was a self ech primer!
Thank you to all who responded! Lots of help and ideas on this website!
