Thanks to a poor decision to buy my ELT early in the build process (and an even poorer decision to buy the Ameri-King 451!) I find that my battery is about to expire in January (just four months after I passed inspection) so I need to either buy a new battery or replace the ELT.
Reading the AD that came out in October it looks like I should just replace it, and I'm curious if there's something that is a direct replacement (can work with my existing panel control for instance) or else what is the favoured unit these days.
Thanks,
Paul

I put the ACK in mine last year. I think it's the cheapest ($489 from AS). It's comes with everything and the install is pretty easy. You can interface a GPS with it for improved accuracy.
Don't think it will work with you existing panel control.
Call Rob (I think that's the name, it's been a while) at MERL, Inc in CT. He is a whiz at ELT's. He also makes battery packs and might be able to provide you with one for your Ameri-King. He sells stuff at about the same price as Aircraft Spruce and the like and I much prefer to support small business when I can. He really knows his stuff.
I have an Ameri King in one of my Stinsons and he provided the fresh battery pack that is in the plane now. He also recommends an affordable replacement unit if you give up on the Ameri King. It requires new brackets but he makes an adapter connection that lets you use the existing wire from the ELT location to the panel display.
for what it is worth I had ameriking 451 after upgrading from older ameriking, it sent emergency signals twice while just sitting in hangar, replaced it with ACK no problems since. It was no fun getting calls from an Air force rescue person in the middle of the night !
