Has anyone used a self etching primer instead of actually etching the metal with success?

I used self etching automotive primer on most steel parts that I've painted so far that are hidden (mixer, flaperon rods, etc.) and found it works great.  Very resilient.  Doesn't chip or flake and gives a solid base for the paint to adhere too.  Bit expensive... a decent "rattle" can of this stuff is about 15$ or more.

When I was building RV's I used a lot of Dupont Veri-Prime self etching primer. It works well but not in a rattle can, it is 2 part and has to be sprayed or brushed. Its also super expensive. I'm going with Duponts rattle can version of self etching primer for the 750 and it seems to be working good for the little that I am using. $25.00 a can locally.

I am already using self etching on internal stuff, im talking about painting the entire airplane

I used DuPont veri- prime on my last 2 builds with no problems.

I've used it by the case on my plane.  After I've deburred the holes,  I rub all the mating surfaces with scotch bright.  Wash them off with laquer thinner then spray on self etching primer.  Seems to work good.
