This posting is fired by a creep that got started on this thread http://www.zenith.aero/forum/topics/bolts-for-the-engine-mounting-t... (to which I suggest you refer).

There are a number of sub-categories that might flare up, such as "Don't worry, fires are such a rare event that extra preventative or control measures are a needless expense and add weight, so discussion is not necessary." Other possible categories might include firewall treatments, break-away valves and other plumbing materials and methods, fire resistant materials (carpet, upholstery, cargo etc.) and methods, fire suppression equipment and methods, parachutes, emergency check lists, and other operational considerations.

I suggest that those interested in any particular sub-category start a separate thread, each named with the initial general subject, FIRE.

The objective should be to remain objective, and to end with a summary conclusion rather than just let the thread fizzle out due to fuel starvation, no?

Excellent suggestion, Wayne.

My biggest suggestion is always that one should borrow from the certified aircraft universe for this subject -- certification standards have a lot of history behind them and using FAA approved fire retardant materials, couplings, etc will let you benefit from a long, expensive and sometimes fatal learning curve. Fire, though rare, has dire consequences.

We have a lot of freedom in the Homebuilt world, but that does not mean that we cannot use the good portions of the certification process to our advantage even if we choose to use alternative products most other places in our planes.
