Anyone have any experience shipping or buying their plane cross country?

Or have any ideas for this?

Thx!

What aircraft are you talking about? I ended up having to ship my 601 hd after some issues and it fit into an enclosed trailer with no major issues. That would be my recommend way but you need the measurements to make sure it would fit.

Thx Chris,

It's a 701

Was trying to find a way for me to get out of driving from East coast to west cost and back.

Thinking of maybe a shipping container or is there shipping companies that have small trucks and enclosed trailers?

I had mine shipped by a man that does this as a business. I don't remember what it cost but I thought it was reasonable. better than me driving out to get it. Don't remember his name but there are several out there. Check with race car shippers sometimes they do both.

Thx Randy, I'll check into the race car shipper.

Jeremy, I ask that guy for a quote.

Thx

If it' airworthy ship the car and buy avgas.

Jeremy,

I was quoted 5500.

Larry,

It's ready for phase 1, so can't fly it.

Would be nice if it could be though.

Would solve a few problems

Last year, this time bought and picked up 601 project Fort Worth TX and brought back to Missouri. I rented a 26" uhaul truck. This fall I bought a completed 601 in Lexington Kentucky and had it shipped to Missouri. They simply removed the wings and used a 16' uhaul trailer. What exactly do you want to know? PM me for my experiances

Thx Gil,

I just looked into uhaul yesterday. Seems like it would be the best idea.

Unless someone has experience with shipping to ft shipping containers.

Rough quote from uhaul was $2300 from Washington to pa.

Not that it's a bad price, just I can make it doable at that price

I would suggest before you exchange money you see the aircraft first hand, I almost bought one sight unseen first hand, and am I glad I didn't exchange any money first. If it has an N number check on the FAA website for it's history. If at all possible try to be there when the plane is loaded or crated, It doesn't take much to do a lot of expensive damage

I read an article that described all the possible mistakes when trailering an aircraft but no longer have the link.   From what I remember, it is essential to allow the road vibrations to be absorbed BUT not transmitted into the airframe.   A bad road surface can do years of stress on the rivets in a very short time.   Tires should be deflated some.   Straps should allow for "wiggle".   Sorry I cannot be more specific.   But that is the critical matter.

RMM

Thx for the info,

Good points about the wiggle and deflating tires.

Sounds like it would be more of a pain than is worth...I think I will have to just wait for one that can be flown home. Less stress on aircraft and me
