Alaska Dispatch has a good article in their Bush Pilot section discussing how to avoid the dreaded gear down water landing. Read it here:

A good read and safety is always a good topic for discussion. I have never flown straight floats, and have always treated the amphib. floats on the aircraft as "a retractable gear" aircraft. On climb out I have always retracted the gear (wheels) even if just flying circuits. I use this knowledge in my brain box that the gear is "up" to force me to make the selection to lower the gear on my downwind check for runways or "check gear up" for water landing. In the world of amphib float flying there are only pilots who have landed with the wrong gear selection or pilots who will land with the wrong gear selection at some point in the future. I really like the idea of a gear warning selector with "RED" lights when the gear is extended as the article stated... the red lights (wheels down indicator) on the panel landing on water might just be the bacon saver. You live a real cool (and cold) place to have a regular bush flying column in your local paper. :>)
