I am in the process of designing and building an inspection panel that will be located on the glare shield of my CH601XL. One consideration is the distance between nut plates on the doubler for the panel. Some people have told me to space tham 1" apart from one another. Others have recommended distances of 1.25" to 1.50".

I would greatly appreciate any advice on that issue from those that have fabricated and installed inspection panels?

Thanks!

Gene,

Look at the Zenith drawing for other inspection panels and just copy what they say there. There are a few inspection panels on the wing bottom skins.  I don't have the drawings handy, but basically I recall most rivet pitches all over the airplane being between 30 mm (1.2") and 40mm (1.5").

Although instead of an inspection panel on your glare shield that will prevent you from doing any two-handed work through it, I recommend making the entire glare shield removable.  That is what I and many other builders have done.  Search the archives for these discussions.

Good luck,

Dave Gallagher

Have you considered making the whole glare shield removable? I did and am very glad I did. There are always changes,  repairs,  etc.  That require good access.  The 650 configuration makes it really difficult to access anything under the glare shield, including the brakes.

I just put nut plates in the rivet hole locations.  It takes 10 minutes to remove the whole thing.

Thanks Gary!
