Has anyone gotten insurance quotes to cover their plane with an AeroMomentum engine? I have heard from a few guys in the local EAA chapter that you are unlikely to get insurance coverage if you use pretty much anything other than a lycoming, continental, or rotax. This is just hearsay but curious if anyone has shopped around for insurance.

Hey Dustin,
I am actually in the process of investigating this to make sure it is easy for everyone. I did speak with Sky Smith during the Zenith event very briefly and he mentioned two or three companies that he works with that wouldn't have a problem with it as long as the pilot had sufficient time etc. I will post my findings and options as well soon. I will NOT be self insuring so this is high priority for me as well.

Awesome. Super interested as I am getting to that "now it's time for the engine" part myself.
Not sure what the engine has to do with it but I had no difficulty getting insurance for my 650 a couple of months ago.

Glenn,
From what I am told, there shouldn't be any issue with a certified engine or something that was factory built with dozens of examples flying. The issue comes in when you either build the engine yourself or there are little to zero known examples currently flying. The risk is that the engine quits on the plane and you will then likely have an insurance claim. From a statistical perspective, a certified engine is less likely to quit. From what I am told, because of this risk some insurance companies might not cover you. From what Bryan said, this might not be the case.
What engine did you use?

Hi Dusty,
I'm flying behind the Viking.

Thanks for sharing Patrick. If you don't mind sharing... what is your yearly premium and amount in hull coverage? I am waiting a response from an insurance broker quoting several options and I will share with everyone that quote when I receive it. But it sounds very positive that this is a non-issue for all of us regardless of engine.
Bryan, it is my understanding a lot of that is going to have to do with the pilot and a lot of deciding factors so those amounts could be drastically different. Had zero issues with people getting the Viking insured, but there are hundreds flying so that might be a different circumstance and deciding factor for the insurance companies of they feel there is more risk involved, I don't know the difficulties if there were only none/few. Regardless, I'm sure someone will, but it might be a larger $$. But I think a broad quote is hard to use because it is more than anything going to be based on pilot

Understood.
Shouldn't be a big deal. I just want to go ahead and pave the road so it is a quick and easy process for everyone (including myself).
Thanks for your response Alissa! Good to have met you and I'll see you guys at the other aviation venues throughout the year I am sure. You two make a cute couple and I truly wish you both happiness together and hope you have fun in this life adventure. ;-)

Just something to keep in mind, I guess the similarities to cars apply, age, experience, accidents ….insurance is always fun :)
Very much appreciated and thank you!
