While changing oil this weekend, I was looking at the magnet on the end of the plug for contamination. I noticed it was a little off center so I twisted it a little and it fell off. I don't know how it is supposed to attach to the end of the plug. It isn't swaged on or pressed on so I will leave it off for now until I know more.

We had a magnetic plug in our gearboxes for some time, and after a few experiences with it falling off as well we implemented the sight glass instead. Seems it is a common issue with those plugs - they do have some types of certified ones but they are $$, if you have thoughts of replacing. -Alissa
Thanks very much. Tom
Is a sight glass useful for detecting metal contaminants or generally primarily used as a quantity indicator?
We drilled a hole in our gearbox oil drain plug for lock wire. Our engine oil sump drain valve and oil filter are also lock wired.
