What is the considered opinion of the group?  Should I buy a 601XLB with a Subaru engine or keep mine with a Jabaru 3300?

Hi Carl,

Why buy another 601 when you got one already ?  Better fix yours knowing the issues you've got.

Unless your plane has serious problems why not stick with it ?

Anyway, as far as Subaru engines go, you've got to look at the manufacturer, are they still in business ?

Do they still support that product ? Do you know anybody flying this particular type engine ?

Anybody has that engine with heavy hour TT ? What were the issues they encountered ?

What were the maintenance issues and how difficult to remedy them ?

Problem with fringe engines is mostly due to quality maintenance people availability if needed.

Remember, this engine is NOT a CAR engine anymore so car mechanics are no help; it is NOT an airplane engine so no airplane mechanic will help. So, who can help if you are in need of assistance ?

I have a Subaru engine with 93 TTSN. Got NO COMPLAINTS at all. This engine sounds and runs good. NEVER had an issue; oil, glycol all in the LOW GREEN even at WOT for extended periods. Was ported for 100HP on dyno and tested.

Redrive is a gearbox type (2.3/1) which works very well with a Warpdrive 3 blade 70 inch set at 15 degrees.

The Subaru is a EA-81 (73hp) modified to 100HP.

If it was me, I would stick with what I got and try to fix the issues I got instead of going out and buying somebody else problems.

You do what you think is best for you.

Norm
