Prime mating areas or not?
Do you really have to prime the mating surfaces when assembling the aircraft if you're going to prime/paint the complete exterior? Or is priming primarily for coastal areas? The plane will be hangered in Indiana most of its life and will see an occasional outside tie down during summer months.

Here in central Indiana I chose to save weight except in a few places where there were stacks of aluminum plate that I thought might not get any anti-corrosion spray between them. Expert builder Paul Dye discuss primer in the Video I linked below. I don't think there are any bad choices with 6061-T6 aluminum unless you are coastal or planning on floats. Our flying club 1963 Cessna 172 is still fine without the primer on the internal parts. Just my choice. Other opinions will vary.

For corrosion prevention in non-coastal areas, just priming the mating surfaces should be fine. Zenith recommends Cortec (link below), which can be brushed or rolled on. It's also water based, so there's no chemical hazards like you have with some other primers. Just make sure you don't let it freeze until after it's used.
