Hi,

Has anyone come up with an eloquent solution for increasing the prop clearance on a 701 with the new style fork. The fork is drilled and installed on the front gear post. Current prop clearance is 7.5 inches. Options appear to be  build a spacer block with top and bottom plates matching existing curvature (about 4-9/16' CLR, if my calculations are right) or attach some side plate extensions (aluminum or steel ?)

Have you checked the Viking website? I know they have a couple of nose fork spacers but I'm not sure if either fit the 701.

Another option would be to take the dimensions to a machine shop and have them fab one for you out of billet aluminum.

Hi Gary,

Thanks for getting back to me, it does not seem like there is a lot of people working on this for the newer fork.

I believe I am now on track with a viable solution, involving an upside down 1/4 steel key (looks like a key and acts like a key in a keyway) cut out of 3" flat bar, that fits into the 1" by 3/16" machined slot in the factory fork. By drilling an oversized hole in that plate at the new axle centre line, and then welding a piece of 3/16 plate to the back of it to get back to the right width between the forks, and finally drilling a new hole for the axle bolt through the oversized hole and the 3/16 plate.  It will be held to the fork by a bolt where the original axle hole was and 1 or 2 above it probably an AN4 midway and an AN3 at the top. Moving the axle down 1.5".  I get over 10" plus of tip clearance, a bit better margin of safety than 7".

I spent a day trying to machine something similar to the above out of aluminum, but it became very complicated and hard to control the result.

Pictures coming.

Thanks again,

Perry
