I am building a 601XL-B and decided to add the access panel  (from the 650 design) underneath. I have the the drawing page (6B-3) from the 650 and ordered all the parts. I have run into a couple things that you guys building a 650 probably can answer quickly...

1. Why are there 23 screws and captive nuts when there are only 12 holes for screws in the door panel?

2. What is part# 6G3-5 shown in the cutaway detail of the hinge?

Thanks,

Mike

Mike,

I can only speak for the 601XL plans, which I thought would have been the same for the rear access panel.  Make sure you are not misinterpreting #12 sized screws for a quantity of 12.  Unless the drawing changed, there should be 8 along each side and 7 on the rear edge.  6G3-5 is shown in the cutaway view because it shares the same Z-stiffener.

Thanks Dave.

The drawing page I have is from the 650 plans. It only shows 12 holes and there are 12 pre-drilled pilot holes in the door panel I received from Zenith a few weeks ago.

Do you have a page 6G3 in your drawing set? I just purchased a complete new set from Zenith for the 601XL and havent looked in that set yet.

Mike,

Yes, the 601XL has a 6G1, 2 & 3 drawings covering the landing gear.  My cover has 23 holes in the access cover (#12 hole, not #12 screw like I mentioned, for a #10 screw).  I thought the 23 was a bit excessive as opening the panel can be a chore on your back.  Put some "L" stiffeners diagonally across the door to keep it from oil canning in flight.  I noticed less noise behind me when I put the stiffeners on mine.

Dave

Dave,

I found 6G3 (it was out of order in my drawing stack).I think I will stick with 12 fasteners for now. Adding the stiffeners sounds like a great idea. Maybe I'll put some thin weather stripping on the edges between the fasteners to prevent any rattling between the panel and bottom skin.

Thanks again,

Mike

Mike, my drawing (6B-3) showed12 holes but the real bottom access door has 23 holes in it, so I used all 23.

the part 6B3-5 is a faring on the bottom of the fusaloge that covers the step bar. it is located slightly forward of the bottom access door.
