Any opinions/feedback on steam gauges vs. Dynon out there?
I like simplicity... I was thinking the 4-pack (asi, vsi, turn-slip, alt) but the Dynon D60 looks awfully inviting at $1825 and has all of that and more. I don't need the "bug setability" or engine monitoring of the more expensive D100, I already have all of my engine gauges... but I'm wondering, will I need steam backups anyway? Would I be crazy to trust a single D60? I flew Dynon in my trainer, it never malfunctioned once. Even 2 of them would still be around $3650, which seems awfully tempting...
Thanks in advance

Do you always have to rain on my parade? Just kidding. That's a wrinkle I hadn't thought of. I'm going to call MGL and talk to the tech guys. Power supplies will go poop more often than the other stuff but when they do the screen goes blank. Also displays have a tendency to fade to grey or go blotchy too. I have 73 year old steamers in my Luscombe that are still working. I've never been able to keep a computer for more than 5 years.
This is a big deal ain't it.

Funny... Yesterday a buddy came over at lunch time and I fired up the panel to show him what was up. I forgot to shut it down and went back to work. At 8 PM my wife told me the "lights" were still ON on my airplane "dash"!!! So they stayed on for a full 8 hrs on a Concorde battery I got from another buddy who is upgrading. I'm just using it for the panel testing!
The master was on, so the relay, Dynon, EMS, King KX-155 and Aera GPS were all on and still nice and bright, although I doubt the King would transmit too much after that amount of time! Guess that gives me an idea of how long I'll last if the alternator kaffs on me one day. :D
I doubt most of us will keep these glass panels for 73 years, not with today's throw-a-way society, but I see panels in a few years probably being run off of used iPads and such for pretty cheap as well. LOL
Brian - - I have flown steam gauges for years. I have 10 hours with the Dynon Skyview and absolutly no doubt that I would not go back to the old system. Doing the phase I testing I just can not get over the recording functions and my ability to analyze flights. I spend as much or more time looking at the recording of my flights, as I do making the flights. I can see every aspect of the flight when I get back on the ground. I have just gotten far enough along with my testing to spend a bit more time looking at instruments (when flying) and the more I study the Skyview, the more I am pleased with it's assistance and information (and I am a long ways from being versatile on all aspects of the Skyviews capabiltiy). Having built my panel, I am also convinced it easier to install and maintain than steam guages - - if I even have to do any maintaining. The system seems pretty solid. I would not even consider backup steam gauges for the EFIS while doing my VFR flying, other than the Aera 500 I have going when I fly (which has some basic instruments built into it).
