I made my weekly 170 mile weekend trip to my home this past Thursday. The flight takes me from Cloverdale California (O60) to Pine Mountain Lake (E45) which is near Yosemite National Park.

As I approached E45 I found myself in a ring of spectacular clouds. In the distance the orographic lifting of the 13000 foot peaks of the Sierras were attempting to build some massive cumulonimbus monsters.

This is one flight I will never forget. It also reinforced my appreciation of the 601's bubble canopy. The 360 degree view truly allows you to fully take in the magic of the great aerial ocean.

Thanks for sharing, this is why we fly.  As a boy, and to this day, I have had a recurring dream- they are all quite similar- that I am flying like bird and it is amazing. It has to be even more satisfying in an aircraft you built.

Inspirational... thanks for posting...

-- on a different note, how do the VGs affect the flight characteristics ?

The vg's greatly improved slow speed handling. This is especially noticeable during the landing phase. I felt i had much more control in the flair, especially when cross winds are a factor.

They also reduced my stall speed by at least 5 mph. It's now in the mid 30's (mph) but hard to measure accurately as I expect the AS indicator is probably not too accurate at the bottom of the scale. My rough gps (without flying multiple headings ) suggests 35 mph.  This is almost irrelevant in a typical landing since the power off descent  rate would be too great.

I really noticed an improvement in my landings after adding the vg's. Well worth the $100 and about a one hour install time.

Ah thanks -- seems like I'm seeing more and more of them... even on birds not usually associated with STOL activities...
