I was looking at a wiring diagram for a UL power engine and they recommend using a large capacitor (68,000uf) across the battery terminals.  I assume this is to help take the alternator load incase the battery failed??  Has anyone using a viking engine incorporated this into their wiring system?

Here is the wiring diagram for the Viking 130 engine.

And here is a simplified alternative for smaller machines such as powered parachutes

The genuine and modern Nippon Denso alternator does not need an external capacitor.  Also, the Viking ECU can handle operation on the alternator directly.  Normal procedure is to operate on one battery and the alternator.  Emergency would be to operate with the alternator non operational and one or the other backup battery.  There should never be a need to operate on the alternator alone without a battery in the circuit.  However this can be done for testing.
