I saw years ago an article on how to test the vacuum level of your engine/cowling setup. 

Anybody know how or a how-to source?

Look at page 52 of this Jabiru Installation document to see if ti is what you are looking for.  The whole thing talks about cooling principles, but page 52 shows the actual test set-up.
