I wanted to mention a free weather app I found, Windy. It's a phenomenal weather app IMHO that is very customizable and provides a wealth of graphical information viewed from a local airport view out to a nation or world-wide view.

It takes a little while to play with the settings and clicking on the map to understand what you can do with it. I selected Wind, Surface, and Airport for the Display on Map settings for my presets while using the NOAA data (NAM) for the weather model, and English settings for the readings - not metric.

By looking at the wind flow, highs/lows, baro lines, etc. it gave me a quick review of weather dynamics too. I typically use the meteogram tab to visually see cloud layer levels and other helpful weather at a glance that you can "play" across the next five days or scroll to any day. If you put surrounding airports in your favorites you can view their METARs at a glance or select the airport to get the TAF and meteograph for it.

You can also drill down to a satellite view of your airport and look at weather flowing across the runway ("particles animation," etc.) or out to the US or anywhere in the world views at "selectable" altitude levels, etc.  It took me a few minutes over a couple of days to learn what it could do. But now it's my go to app for pre-flight and daily weather, traveling, etc.

You may have found this, but I wanted to share it in case not.

It's available on the app store for Apple and Internet at https://www.windy.com. I don't know about Google play store.

Blue skies,

Tim

Totally agree. I love this app ans use it regularly. The graphical wind pictures along your route of flight and at various altitudes is awesome.

I am clearly "directional challenged". As hard as I try I have a difficult time envisioning the relative wind direction with my direction of flight, at least on the ground. The flowing path of the wind on Windy helps me visualize the wind and how it will affect my flight.

In the area I fly the wind patterns change over short distances due to terrain and other factors. I can have wind flowing in very different directions, even on a short flight. The app is great for understanding this, It also helps for altitude planning.
