    so far i am very happy with the subaru .hopefully i will be in the air this week .i have been flying in a friends 701 with a 20,000 hour pilot to prepare for my fist flight. it was very windy both last week and yesterday, we were the only ones flying due to the wind, but i think i have learned more flying with him in the wind than i have since  i started flying.it has given me more confidence in the 701 and in my own flying ability . i now know that i  have chosen the right plane for the flying we have to deal with on  coast of British columbia and i am looking forward to getting mine in the air .i will keep you posted

    Hi Norman,

    The model is nearly finished and within a week or two will be taking to the sky after doing groung runs and bunny hops to get the trimming right.

    I'm setting up the servo rate to be as gentle as possible. After all it is not a stunt plane although the motor is powerfull enough for the 5 and a half lb plane to hang on the prop here in the house (i'm hanging on of course).

    As soon as all is to my satisfaction and the plane is flying and trimmed out correctly, I'll get a couple of videos done and posted on this site.

    Hi norm still waiting, called tc today and got tranfered to a million different places still trying to find out who has it   and whats the hold up,  maybe it will be in the mail today .the mdra inspector that came and passed my plane  is on a 4 week holiday in the baha so i cant talk to him  about it. although he called me before he left and said he was maling it that day .

    that was 22 days ago .it was supose to take 7 to 10 days . im not very patient with stuff like this but for now i just have to wait .  i will let you know as soon as it arrives

    Hey norm it came on Friday so I went flying all day Sunday and for two hours today had to re pitch the prop twice and had some cooling problems initially but got them sorted out .
    Climbs at 1000 feet per min at 60 mph and got 88 mph at 4500 rpm level flight with the cool prop and the dual bing carb .
    temp right now was 195 deg Celsius although first flight was 230 deg c at climb and cooled to 200 in the Cruz so happy lovin it ,its all I can think about hope to send some vidios soon 6.5 hours done this week end

    Hi norm .
    My propeller is set to minus one on the cool prop gage I will convert that some how for you when I get back to the air port weather is windy and rainy for the next couple of days so now I'm waiting for the weather
    I climb at 5200 rpm right now but I may rep itch the prop again ,first I want to fly a little more and I will decide later

    I want to pitch it for more climb and less speed if I leave the Cruz rpm at 4900 I am getting 88 mph and and it's spooling up .i still am not at gross weight and I would like more climb so I think I'm going to keep pitching it until I get 80 mph Cruz max at a max 5600 on climb out and increase the climb for when I'm at gross weight sounds right to me

    hi norm my deployment speed for the flaps  is 60 to 65 works good but i moved the C ofG back a little by moving my batery back a bit an it gave me more elevator with power off still inside the envelope even at gross wieght though .it sure drops a bit  when you take the flaps off in flight , all good . lousy weather today looks like i got to wait until thersday to fly here

    hi norm  i will send the pictures of the muffler as soon as i find the cord to upload them to the computer  .how did the beanie mod efect the elevator with power off i seem to have a stalling elevator at full idle at slower speed even with the vgs under the  elevator i ,did the beanie mode help with this

    My elevator is quick to respond its just when I pull power to idle I can feel the elevator starting to stall and I have to pull the stick a long ways back to keep the nose from dropping or add power so I was wondering if I did the beani mod maybe I wouldn't have to add as much power .moving the c of g back also helped a lot but its not as comfortable as I would like if there was an engine failure .thanks I will look at doing the beanie mod when I get time by for now still not flying weather here should clear up tomorrow

    hi norm i gave them my journey log book , my log book and a copy of the climb test  700 feet a miniut at 60 miles per hour 20 deg outside temp at full gross. cruzing at 85 mph @ 4700 rpm  . at 5200 rpm  i get 95 miles per hour level flight at 4700 rpm i am burning 17. 98 litres per hour  climbed to 10,000 feet no problems very happy with every thing.  i will send some pictures soon .

    no, by the time I got on the ground it had cooled a little and I was able to turn the prop by hand but the compression was gone, it turns easily . im going to take it apart this weekend and make a decision if its rebuildable or not . sucks because the engine was working great

    well you now know it will run about 5 minutes without oil  hahaha

    hope I can save the cam because I had it ground special and it was pumping out around 115 horse power I was very happy with every thing .and having lots of fun with it .

    sure glad I built a 701 as I cleared the lights at the end of the runway, she was still flying at 30 mph   and I had about a 75 foot landing  dead stick .try that with a harmon rocket hahaha .

    hi norm this engine is a stock ea 81 hydraulic lifter motor and it works better than my other one which was a solid  lifter motor with a cam from stratus.

    this one is much smoother and a little more power  and runs cooler to ,who would have thought

    is yours solid lifter or hydraulic

    saw you took your slats off and put vgs, how was that, do you recommend it

    Aircraft Spruce #06-00823 Shock Cord Ring 1080HD. Check your plans in case the CH701 uses a different number. The 1080HD is used on the CH601HD also....2 per main gear and 1 on the nose.

    Yes flying a lot went for 2 hours today and 1 hour yesterday engine is working great . Bought another kool prop blade to make a three blade works awesome 85 mph at 4500 rpm 17 litres per hour 700 fpm this is defiantly the right prop for the ea81 thinking of talking the slats of what is it like without the slats and no VGS did you try that

    Normand, thanks for the quick reply.  That is exactly my intention...Build a CruZer with the STOL landing gear and add VG's...trying to figure out engine choices...not 100% sold on the UL 350is...wondering if a Rotax 912 or 912is will get me over 100mph???  Not sure!!

    You most certainly can do whatever you want with that checklist.  Remember its a rough draft and the numbers are not all worked out.

    i bt new spars from Zenith and changed the flange angle on the rear one for the new airfoil. same size as plans. less trouble for me to build from scratch rather than tear out and redo. lotsa info out there. try google 701 symettrical horizontal stab. kept the angl of incidence the same but that was a guess. works much better. worth the trouble

    I didn't build a new elevator. The plans version works ok for me. I kept the original stab in case I didn't like the new one. It's in the rafters now.

    Hi Norm,

    No, I did not fabricate ribs for the 701. All the parts I mad with my CNC are for the 750.

    It took me half a day to make all the ribs for the slats with my CNC...... what a time saver.

    I'm waiting for some ALuminum to cover the slats and I'm working on the spars now.

    I have to make an 8 foot bending brake and then start .

    I designed all the ribs for the wings and all the parts required. Once ready...press the button and out comes the parts...lol  

    I make the form block on the router CNC as well....saves allot of time

    It will come in handy when I start making skis and floats...lol

    And you?  what are you playing around with these days??

    Nice to see you're keeping busy. Can't wait for the pilot reports on your mods !!!

    As for the wings being enlarged by a foot, you should contact Bob Pelland on this board. He's a buddy of mine building a 701 and a 750. He may be willing to part with some parts you are looking for. I know he has a set of 701 wings with an extra foot on each side. His craftmanship is second to none.

    Take care and keep us up to date on your progress.

    We should get together sometimes.

    I have started flying only last summer, 4 solo flying hours so far. There are two more 701s in the area but the others do not speak English. zbyszekKedziora is one of them (see his profile for some pics) and basically he has asked me to contact you with question about wing fences and the beanie installed on your plane - what are the differences / advantages comparing to original set-up without slats?

     Hi !  I took off on tires with about 2" of snow on the ground . I paced 48 ( yards ) on take off and 73 on landing . My nose wheel was off in about 12 feet . Can't wait to put the skis on and get out on the lakes once they are frozen .

    Norm,several reasons , If you set your gross at the lsa max 1320 , the 701 has a LOT more usable , it also takes off shorter , lands shorter , has less cost to operate, less cost to build , takes up less space in hanger, and is a more responsive plane to fly , its the difference between flying a Lopriste, and another cessna, it has short field performance unmatched by ANY other plane , even ones costing twice as much , none of this matters much if you are flying lower 48 airports , but is life or death in some places in Alaska...BOB

    Thanks for the Ram Performance tip - they aren't far from me!  I build Subaru powered racecars (FFR 818-R's) so I am familiar with the engines. Can you still do a short takeoff with it?

    Cool, thanks for the info.  On the partially finished aircraft I purchased, the leading edge slats look like they are crooked and I was thinking about removing them.

    STOL: I used to have an Alarus 2000 (Zenair CH2000) and it was the same way, you could chop power and bring it in for very short landings. There are a few short grass fields around here ~800-1000ft and wanted to make sure that choosing a Soobie wasn't going to handicap the plane.  I read so much negative stuff on the Subaru that I was worried.  

    What is the Beanie mod?

    Hi Norm:  I'm still kicking.  I'll bet ur glad winter is fading.

    I have the Matco split rims but opted for tubes to keep tires from going flat if bead slips open due to low air pressure.

    I can't understand how your nose gear tire spun on the rim.  So if you know of a type of suitable adhesive for the tire bead to rim, let me know. I read about an Alaskan pilot whipped up some bannock dough to stuff into a flat tire. Heated the bannock with a wood fire until the dough rose then made a take off. I don't want to try this.  Thanks    Brian

    Hi Normand:

    just checking your photos.  I am really impressed with your free thinking of directing the engine exhaust into the external instrument venturi.  Absolutely brilliant solution to the high angle and slow flying of the 701 which can badly affect vacuum stability for instruments and no chance of getting plugged with snow or ice. Elegant!!

    I have no idea how to post pictures but I guess it is time I learned. So I'll call Zenith tomorrow. Been really enjoying the build and the advice I get from others including yourself. Torqued the HStab down today.  Within 3 mm of square. I may just settle for this.

    Put rubber pads on elevator stops. I hate the clunking of metal to metal. Never a good thing.    Brian

    Agreed - I was lucky only the tail was complete. Not too much work at the end. I can just imagine having to drill the rivets on 2 wings...... ouch. Thanks for the feedback.

I want to get a faster plane later this year that is faster something that will do at least 115-120 mph for cross country, don't find the need for STOL performance landing in 500ft fields.Has to be high wing float capable, anyway hope we can meet up some time.     I building to third edition.  However, I'm using a custom STOL nose rib.  The nose rib I'm using droops down about 1 inch and it's length is about the same as the regular nose rib plus the slat.  (~14 inches) There's 4 or 5 builders using this nose rib.  There's one CH-701 that flying with it.  The shape was modeled and a section of it was strapped on to the wing of this CH-701 and yarn tested.  This shape yields most of the STOL and a lot less drag across most angles of attack and airspeed.
