Hi all, Happy New Years,

I was planning on running my engine (912 ULS w approximately 16 hrs on it) yesterday, when I discovered the flange gaskets on both aft exhaust were blown out on the top (right underneath the carburetors. On closer inspection and removal of the headers, all the gaskets had hardened and would crumble. I made the gaskets out of white Mr. Gasket Exhaust Gasket material. It seems obvious now that the material is not rated for the temperatures at the exhaust ports on a 912 ULS, see photo.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a gasket material that can handle the specified exhaust gas temperature of about 1500 F.

I realize I may have a problem in finding a gasket for a custom flange to flange connection.

Hi Perry,

It looks like the white Mr. Gasket Performance material is made from acrylic (plastic), but the Ultra-Seal is made of graphite and steel and is designed for high heat, so I'd give that a try. Here's where I found that info: https://www.holley.com/blog/post/guide_to_mr_gasket_exhaust_gaskets/

Cheers,

Matt

Hi Matt,

Thanks.

After a quick look last night, the highest temp stuff I could find through Mr. Gasket was 1200 F.  I visited the local automotive performance shop (Mopac) this morning and found material called "Remflex" which is good for peak temperatures of 3000 F and 2000 F day to day, according to package. It comes in 1/8 thick but crushes down for better seal. It comes various dimensions. I bought a piece 6.5 " X 11 " which should make at least 2 sets of gaskets. Remflex even provides a sample in the package to experiment with. Lots of clear instructions on the package to prevent gotcha's (good thing for airplanes).

Pheuu, though I might have been hooped. I will let you know how it works.

Oh, good! That seems like it'll work well.

Hot exhaust gases leaking under the carbs sounded like a recipe for disaster. I'm glad you caught it early! Was the engine performing abnormally, or did you catch it during a visual inspection?
