You may find that negative flap settings cause the airplane to have interesting flight characteristics when transitioning from cruise to  landing pattern power settings unless you adjust the flaps concurrently.

How much negative from the standard setup did you go? Also what prop and rpm are you getting at full throttle straight and level? Did the stall speed change any with negative flaps? I believe the Maule's use this setup.
