With the forward cowling removed, I used a laser pointer to shoot from the top flange of the firewall to the top flange of the instrument panel - this gave me a nice little red dot of light on the canopy to make a mark. Connected the marks with a line and then cut. This worked extremely well and I only had to do a couple of very minor trim cuts and after re-installing the cowling, the canopy sits perfectly around it, with a 1/4" gap for weatherstrip.
