the cowl is made up of a nosepiece from aircraft spruce, with 4 inches cut out of the center to fit it to the vw engine width. the top aluminum piece is 990 mm wide at the front, 1030 mm wide at the back, and 650 mm long on the sides and 740 mm long in the center (curved at back to interface with fuselage).
the bottom piece is 1250 mm wide at the front, 1380 mm wide at the back, 650 long on each side, and has a cutout that is 520 mm long and 500 mm wide at that back end to allow the nosewheel and exhaust pipes to exit. both top and bottom are re-inforced with l-angle (two pieces each). the pictures should be self-explanatory. the sides of the cowl overlap the fuselage by about 4 inches and I have built little brackets out of scrap aluminum (two per side) to attach the sides to. I am using nutplates and number 10 screws to hold it all together - not very efficient but when assembled it is very stiff and sturdy.
