Installing the stub axle requires drilling a 1/2" hole through the 3/4" thick aluminum gear leg. This stub axle is match drilled to the MATCO axle bolt pattern (with a 1/2" bolt passed through both to ensure accurracy) and is then mounted on the inside of the gear leg to serve as a drill guide for drilling the hole. This drilling of this 1/2" hole is the only modification made to the standard kit gear.
