Because the firewall tabs on the Zenair made bracket are not made long enough, or on the angle following the firewall stiffener there is no way to install the AN4-5A bolts above the motor mount bolts as on the Zenair plans. There is barely enough metal tab to use the motor mount bolts and still respect the edge clearences.

Nick Hientz at Zenair, Midland has been in contact with me and they are looking at changing the design as you have suggested. Its more complicated than simply cutting bar stock... but in these days of plasma cutters and CNC machines there is room for improvements.
How the hell could they make it so wrong? I looked up Peter Autenried's photos from a while back and his seems to fit but like you the tab behind the motor mount goes straight up and not any higher than the the engine mount itself! How hard could it be to angle the brace on the float mount to follow the angled vertical stiffener on the firewall and have it go up maybe 4 inches?? I don't get it...
