Here in Canada I fly with the 2 widths of duct tape over the oil cooler inlet NACA duct. Air temperature 0 F degrees. Do not cover up the oil cooler duct or radiator openings for 1st flight testing. The engine is tightly cowled and will make heat at 5200 - 5800 rpm. Static rpm (brakes ON) should be 5200 - 5250 rpm range. This will give 5800 rpm WOT in straight & level flight. I will take 10 - 15 minutes idle rpm to bring engine oil temps to 120 degrees for normal take off temps.
John, thanks for the warning. Taxi testing - oil temp = 180 degrees F, during static run ups - started to climb to 200 degrees F. I removed the cover on the oil cooler. CHT 140 degrees F during taxi testing and 190 degreees F during static run ups. I'm use to Lycomings; taking a while to get comfortable with this "new fangled" engine.
Be careful with covering too much of the oil cooler. Also do not worry about low CHTs or coolant temps.
