I riveted the wrong side first. Now, I cannot pull the skin over the gussets on the other side.

Look at it as the best opportunity to test your un-riveting skills.... While testing your patience...lol
It won't be be the last time things like that happen...!!!
It's all part of the fun... Enjoy your building time.
I rivetted the whole stabilizer, elevator and rudder just to find out I needed to leave one side open for pre-cover inspection here in Canada ...lol. I feel your pain.
