We decided to overnight at this "rite of passage" airport because, at 8380' it's one of the highest paved airports in the country. Leadville and Telluride are both higher, any other suggestions? During our approach, the AWOS was reporting a 17kt wind at exactly 90deg to the runway with a density altitude of 10,300'. You can definitely feel it when maneuvering near the field and the little voice in the back of your head keeps saying "you're not in Kansas (or CA for that matter) anymore." Later, we both woke up in the middle of the night with mild altitude sickness, in spite of being good and only having one O'Doul's with diner.
