Flew my Zenith 701 into a short mountain strip yesterday. This one is soft and sandy with about 700’ of usable runway. Field elev. 6.300 feet

What engine do you have?

Hi Chris, it handles it pretty well, but it will require more runway at higher DAs. These light airplanes are really sensitive to temperature and loading. I routinely take mine into 8000’ elevation strips with two aboard on summer mornings. At a 10,000’ density altitude with two aboard I can comfortably operate in & out of 2000’ strips. Mountainous terrain, once the day warms up, can quickly overwhelm a low powered airplane, though, with downdrafts and turbulence, so you need to do any real mountain flying in the cool of the morning.

Nice! How does it handle the density altitude? I’m currently looking at relocating to the Trinidad area and was wondering how the 701 performs in Colorado. Any info would be much appreciated!

This is the Zenith 701’s playground. 6300’ elevation, 700’ usable runway, soft sand and a 1500’ cliff at the end. These old mining strips in Western Colorado aren’t accessible to most airplanes, but the Zeniths and Carbon Cubs make it fine.
