While I was loitering in Aircraft Spruce I picked up some jewlery for my CH750 panel. A Precision Verticle Card Compass. I have a compass in the Dynon D180, a compass in the Bendix king AV80R GPS, and a compass in the spare GPS in my flight bag. But I just feel naked without a magnetic compass on the panel in case everything else fails. The orange thing on the top of the glareshield is SPOT satellite PLB that all the guys up here in northern Ontario..Canada use. It allows tracking of my flight by friends & family via Google Earth maps updating every 10 minutes. I can signal for mechanical help, let them know I have arrived safely, let them know I am O.K. waiting out bad weather, or contact CFB Trenton Search & Rescue with and aircraft in distress S.O.S. Note - the vertical card compass is not calibrated yet, and niether is the fuel flow...it should be 4.5 US gal/hr. I really have to stop flying and get that stuff done :>)

The D180 also has a built in altitude encoder that comunicates with my GARMIN 327GTX transponder to provide Mode C altitude function. This saves you having to buy the altitude encoder seperately.
If you price "steam guages" + engine instruments it will be about $600 less than a D180. But then the D180 includes an artificial horizon for the same money. An artificial horizon steam guage is an additional $2,000 on top of basic steam guage pkg. so the D180 is $1,400 cheaper. Plus the D180 includes fuel management computer, outside air temp, TAS, DG, sun rise / sun set, A of A for the same price. Installation is more complicated if you dont like small wires? My CH601HD has "steam guages" + Grand Rapids EIS to handle the engine "six pack" I call it a hybrid panel... a little of both.
Thanks, Bob,
Apparently some of the other manuf of LCD panels do not have the operating temp range of the Dynon products. If I calculated the conversion correctly, that's down to negative 22 F. Another example of "you get what you pay for". I think my budget will require me to stay with the steam gauges and figure how to squeeze them all in the limited real estate. You certainly have an outstanding panel and I, like others, are a bit envious.

The D180 has performed flawless the past 3 winters. From -30C to +30C the display has worked without problems.
Hi Bob,
I am laying out my instrument panel and realizing that there is not much room for steam gauges, but am hesitant to go the glass panel route. I'm concerned about the minimum operating ambient temps for the glass panel systems. What has been your experience? Do you have to preheat the cockpit in winter before those panels will come on line? Several I have checked on require at least 14 degrees F before they are reliable.
Bill
That is my dream panel. Nice job....and still room for a chart box or small ice box for a couple of stellas.
Looks terrific. Of course buying some jewelry for your girl is a good idea to keep her happy once a year!
Looking good Bob !! But I see more available real estate on your instrument panel for a few more jewelry pieces..-:)
I guess another trip to Aircraft Spruce is in order !!! hahaha
