Well it looks very nice! Great craftsmanship.
No, the light is very robust, but it does require some washers on plastic inside the wing tip. The plate is mostly there to make the small, but very powerful light look right on a fairly large mounting flat that was probably designed for larger incandescent lights. It also acts as a reflector behind the light.
Is this trim plate necessary to make the mounting surface more rigid, or are you just dressing up the "look" a bit?
