Hello all.
In 1997 when I first began building my CH601 HDS tail wheel airplane the hot engine to use was the EA-81 Subaru. So I obtained one of these engines. I was also told by many that an Lycoming 0235 would be way too heavy. So installed the Subie. Engine has ran well for over 7 years but has had problems with keeping rings in it. Keep loosing compression, replaced rings 2 twice after the intical rebuild. Also had heads rebuilt by Ram. Engine also ran hot in the 220 range. I…

After 6 years of flying with a EA 81 Subaru engine I am tired of expermiting with trying to correct a cooling problem.
I am giving up on the subie and am in the process of buying a used lycoming 0235 C2C 108 hp engine. After I get the lyc inspecteed and ready to install i am going to remove the subie complete with motor mount, prop, radiators, oil coolers and all other items attached to engine and weight it to give a camparasion with the lyc. I feel I can install the Lyc at the same…

I am in Fairbury which is S.E. of Lincoln on the NB KS border. I actually live only 3 miles north of the state line.
I am building fuselage. Nearly ready to disassemble forward 1/2 and begin assmbly and final riveting of completed back to front cabin area. I had wings and all controls done, but now must take wings apart to do upgrade. I was lucky I could incorporate upgrade into cabin area as I built. I hope to have fuselage on gear in the next couple of months.
Engine? Corvair, then Jabiru, now very serious about ul260i. I really like discussion of UL engine and talked to Ray who has a 260 installed in a 650 and is selling them along with Gus Warren. He is very high on performance and weight, I just am concerned that the design is so new. Will the company be around? Continued Euro devaluation is really making engine look like a buy also. This Ray had a WW corvair and liked it, but said this engine out performs Jab 3300, believe it or not.
Check out the UL Power site and tell me what you think of engine. I was interested in the 350, but this Ray said 260 is so good, he would only consider 350 for mountainous areas. I would really appreciate someone elses thoughts on trying such a new engine as all designs surely have some growing pains.
thanks for the communication, Jerry
