Rick,
I emailed Roger at Zenith last month about the status of the SAM and wanted to share his response:
Hi Ed,
Hi Rick,
Are you going to the Zenith open house this weekend?
Ed
Thanks Rick, always nice to hear from a fellow helo bubba and I would be interested in hearing the response to your e-mail from Zenith.
I emailed them about a visit and tail workshop last year after the SAM was reintroduced at Oshkosh. At that time the were still in the engineering process and weren't scheduling workshops or factory visits for the SAM. According to the SAM website they have just completed the re-engineering of the wings and have parts ready for the CNC machine.
I asked one of the experienced builders in my EAA chapter about the SAM and he said the same thing about builder support for the RV versus a new design. It's all true, but I guess a network has to start somewhere.
With the blind rivets and final-size matched-drilled holes, I can see this kit coming together more smoothly than the RV. For my skill level anyway.
Ed
We're in the same boat! I have an RV-8 tail kit almost completed in the garage. When I saw the new SAM EX I delayed my plans for buying more RV components. Well, that and my daughter decided to get married ($$).
Like you, I like the idea of blind rivets (I don't enjoy bucking rivets) and I especially like the removable canopy.
If anybody from Zenith reads this, let's open up a SAM EX forum and get the community started.
